About Us

The Wellesley community has been saddened by the deaths by suicide of several residents, (including high school students) in recent years. The schools, Town departments, faith community and others have strived to find ways to prevent and mitigate the human suffering that causes suicidal behavior, and the pain experienced by survivors in the aftermath of a completed suicide.

As a result, the Wellesley Mental Health Steering Committee (MHSC) was formed in 2007, initially to support the schools in their efforts to identify and counsel at-risk children, and to support parents by offering them meaningful mental health resources.  The MHSC has since expanded its role by providing community mental health resources and tools for residents of all ages. This effort includes disseminating information to middle-aged men and senior citizens; two groups particularly at risk for depression and suicide.

This website is modeled after It offers visitors resources that encourage them to take the necessary steps to help themselves or another individual in emotional crisis.  The Wellesley MHSC is grateful to the Needham Coalition for Suicide Prevention for allowing its Wellesley neighbors to replicate their website template and localize the information.

The website was developed with grant funds awarded to the Wellesley Health Department by the Fund for Wellesley The mission of the Fund for Wellesley is to promote the common good and to benefit all residents of the Town. The Fund for Wellesley is a permanent source of funding that fosters innovation and collaboration in support of community needs and opportunities. The Health Department thanks the Fund for Wellesley for the opportunity to provide the community with salient mental health resources.

The Health Department extends its appreciation to Screening for Mental Health, Inc in Wellesley for allowing their ACT® (Acknowledge/Care/Tell) model of suicide prevention to be used throughout this website.
